Fit beats padding almost every single time

A snug box protects better than a loose box crammed with filler.

The instinct when packing something fragile is to put it in a bigger box and surround it with more stuff. This is usually the wrong move. In a box that fits, the item is held still, and the walls of the box take impacts and pass them around the structure. In an oversized box, the item has room to accelerate. When the parcel is dropped, the item keeps travelling after the box has stopped, and it arrives at the inside wall carrying speed it never would have gathered in a snug box. Filler slows that a little. It does not remove the runway.

Fit also changes how the box behaves in a stack. A snugly filled box transmits load from the parcel above straight through the contents to the floor, sharing the work between the walls and whatever is inside. An oversized box has to carry that load entirely on its own walls, and a partly empty box is far more likely to deform inwards. That deformation is what puts pressure on the item you were trying to protect, from a direction you were not thinking about when you chose the padding, and it arrives slowly rather than as a single obvious impact.

This is why professional packing spends more effort on selecting a size than on stuffing a void. Where filler earns its place is in stopping small movements and cushioning sharp corners, not in bridging large gaps, and past a certain point extra filler simply makes the box heavier and harder to seal. If you are wrapping something at home, the useful question is not how much padding to add, but whether a smaller box exists. If it does not, tightening the box around the item, by cutting it down and refolding it, is worth more than another handful of loose material.
